PLM International ("PLM") was founded in 1972 as a manager of railcar investments. From 1972 through 1996 it raised over $1.7 billion of equity for investment in railcars, aircraft, marine containers, and shipping vessels. In 1988 PLM was listed on the American Stock Exchange and remained public until 2001 when it was acquired by affiliates of Hera East Holdings. In 2005 PLM sold its railcar leasing business to CIT Group Inc. and its investment program business to an affiliate of AMA Capital Inc.

Today, PLM is a platform for its management and equity owners to make private equity investments in basic industry, real estate, and financial services. In addition to its transportation businesses, during the past several years management and its affiliates have acquired or managed an income producing real estate portfolio consisting of over 1 million square feet of commercial and industrial space, 1,700 apartment units and a development portfolio which consists primarily of a 275 acre single family home project in Malibu, California, a 1,000 unit single family home development in Kelowna, British Columbia, and over 100 acres of mixed use land in Florida. They also are joint owners of two ski resorts (located in Durango, Colorado and Kirkwood, California) with approvals to develop in excess of 1,000 housing units, and Caneel Bay, an exclusive hotel on the island of St. John.
